Choosing the Tool Material Before the Brand

Brand matters less than getting the material right for the machine you actually have. A rigid, well-maintained CNC machine justifies carbide; an older belt-driven pillar drill does not, and carbide fitted to it will chip long before it pays for itself.

Tool materialSuitsWatch out for
HSSMild steel, aluminium, general maintenance and repair, older or lighter machinesLowest cutting speeds; will not survive production rates
HSS-Co (cobalt)Stainless steel, tougher and work-hardening alloysCosts more than HSS, and is slightly more brittle
Solid carbideHardened steel, cast iron, production runs on rigid machines with coolantChips if the setup flexes or the coolant is intermittent
CoatedAny of the above where heat or abrasion is the limiting factorAdds cost with no benefit if the tool is failing from chipping rather than wear

How to Specify a Cutting Tool Order

Roughly half the enquiries we receive need a follow-up question before they can be quoted. Including the following avoids that round trip:

  • The manufacturer part number or catalogue reference, if you have it.
  • Diameter, and for drills the flute length or overall length as well.
  • The shank type and size, so the tool fits your holder or chuck.
  • The workpiece material, including the grade where it matters, such as which stainless.
  • The machine and its spindle speed range.
  • For taps, the thread designation, and whether the hole is through or blind.
  • The quantity now and your expected re-order frequency.

No part number is not a problem. A photograph of the worn tool with a ruler alongside it, plus the material, is normally enough for us to identify what you were running.

Regrinding or Replacing?

For larger diameter HSS drills and end mills, regrinding can be worthwhile. For small diameters, for most solid carbide, and for anything coated, the economics usually favour replacement: the regrind cost approaches the price of a new tool, and a reground tool loses its original coating and geometry.

The deciding factor is normally consistency. If you need every tool in a production run to behave identically, new tooling removes a variable.

Re-ordering Without Stopping the Job

Cutting tools are consumables with a predictable failure rate once you measure it. Note how many parts a tool produces before it is changed, and you can order ahead of the failure rather than after it.

For workshops running steady production, we can set up regular supply so the shelf is topped up on a schedule. Get in touch, or read about contract supply.

Buy Cutting Tools in Lahore

When purchasing cutting tools, consider the material being machined, the required dimensions, machine compatibility, and the tool's intended application.
